Editing Blog for Music Video

On December 2 and 4, 2019, in my AICE Media Studies class, I worked on editing my music video. I really enjoyed doing the editing process because for the most part it was coming together like it was originally planned. Editing is one of my favorite parts because I get to see the music video come to life. During the editing process there were very few issues. One of the issues we had was, my group mate and I were worried that we didn't get enough footage; however, we were able to work around this issue and in the end we did have enough. Since, this is my second time editing a video I had more knowledge on how to do it. This meant the editing process didn't take as much time as when I created my first video. Leila and I also have great time management skills, which helped with getting the video done as quickly as we could with it still being high quality. Overall, I felt that the editing process for the music video went very well and that the end product was worth all the time and effort my group mate and I put into the video.

On December 2, 2019, before my group mate and I started editing, we looked back at our previous blogs, such as the storyboarding blog. This was helpful because it gave me a reminder of what the video was supposed to look like. While Leila was downloading our music I was working on importing the footage. On the previous day, I downloaded the footage from the SD card to my flash drive. I did this on my own computer at home. I felt that it would be easier to download the footage onto the school laptop through the flash drive. After all the footage was downloaded onto a file, I imported it onto the editing program. The program I used is called Pinnacle Studio. After Leila imported the music we started editing. During this day, I took more control over the laptop, while Leila shared her opinions. The first thing I wanted to do was put the footage in the correct order. I would look at the different takes of the same scenes and decide which looked best with my group mate. After choosing, I would add the footage to the track. I also cut a lot of the footage, so there wouldn't be any unwanted footage shown in the music video. My group mate and I worked during the entire class time, so we could finish the music video as soon as possible. By the end of class, we finished adding and cutting most of the footage. We were about three fourths finished.

On December 4, 2019, we were able to finish editing the video. Unfortunately, we did have some issues with editing. When Pinnacle Studios was opened, Leila immediately realized that the music wasn't playing. When we couldn't figure out why it wasn't playing, we went to our teacher for assistance. Our teacher tried doing a few things; however, it still wasn't working. After many trials, it was decided that we should re-import the music. This meant Leila also had to re-cut the music track to fit the video. This wasted a lot of time, which I wasn't thrilled about. However, I put it behind me and got back to work. After that, I worked on adding and cutting any of the footage that was still needed for the video. It didn't take me to long because my group mate and I mostly finished it on our first editing day. The next thing for me to do was add in the transitions. I wanted to add in fades to make the video more interesting and to better showcase the music video's story. After I finished the transitions, Leila changed the speed of some of the footage. While she was doing that, I gave her some of my suggestions for the speed of the footage. One of the last steps was changing the colors of some of the scenes. Leila and I worked together to figure out which color filter would be best. We decided on one that dulled the colors in the footage. After the color change was applied to the pieces of footage we wanted, I exported the music video. Exporting was the last step of the music video's editing process.

Filming Blog Part 2

On Wednesday, November 27, 2019, I was finally able to film the music video. A lot of preparation went into making sure everything goes according to plan, so it was exciting to actually get to film. Making a thorough plan made it easy to do the filming because I knew exactly what needed to be videoed. There were no issues with filming, the weather was perfect, our location had no other people, and the actresses did very good acting. I'm very thankful for the actresses in the music video because they didn't have to be in it. They volunteered their own time to help me and my group mate. For that reason, I am very thankful.

The filming day officially started at 9:45 am. This is when I arrived at Leila's house with the two actresses. The actresses carpooled with me, so we could all get there at the same time and start right away. At Leila's house we went over the food we would have for the picnic setting. I helped her transfer all the food into the cooler so it would be easy to take to our filming location. Some of the props, such as plates and cups, were also put in the cooler for easy transportation. When packing the cooler, I made sure to pack some waters, so no one would get dehydrated. After the packing was finished, I examined the camera and tripod like I did the day I received them to make sure everything was still working. I also made sure the camera's battery was full. I charged it the previous night, so I wouldn't have to worry about it dying while filming. Around 10:00 a.m. my group mate, actresses, and I headed out to our filming location. We decided to walk because the park wasn't to far from Leila's house.

Once we all arrived at the park it was time to set up. I had previous experience with the camera, so I set it up for filming. While Leila was creating the setting I was giving the actresses a rundown of the music video. I was explaining to them what the video was about and what scenes we will need to take. Also the kind of emotions they will need to be showcasing. Once everything was set the filming began.

One of my roles for the music video was being the camerawoman. I filmed most of the point of view shots which was actually harder then I expected. It was very awkward holding the camera directly in front or besides one of the actresses' faces. Since the camera was also directly near the actress's face it made it sort of difficult to see what was being filmed. I made sure a lot of shots were taken because of this. I wanted to make sure I had perfect takes to work with when editing. While it may have been difficult, it was fun getting creative when figuring out how to take the shots. Also, as a camerawoman I would give signals to the actresses when the camera was rolling and when they could begin acting.

Another one of my roles in the filming process was to co-direct. Being a co-director gave me the ability to direct the actresses on what to do in certain takes. Before shooting a take, I would discuss with my group mate, who was also a co-director, on exactly what needed to happen in the take. For example, I went over how one of the scenes was a tilt going down to up and that the main actress needed to be in frame and act very happy. I would also discuss this with the actresses so they would know what they were doing in a take. Another example of directing is, during the point of view shots of playing the guitar, I would direct the actress on when to start playing.

Overall, the filming process went very well. Everything was videoed in an orderly fashion and my group mate and I were able to finish all of the filming. There were no issues with the camera and none between the actresses and myself. The actresses did everything I needed from them, but I also told them if they weren't okay with doing something in a certain take, they didn't have to and I would change it. I didn't want the actresses to feel forced to do anything when they were volunteering their time. I believe that the filming process was a lot of fun and I learned a lot more about filming from this experience.

Filming Blog Part 1

Today in my AICE Media Studies class, I am supposed to be writing a blog about filming my music video. However, since I didn't film over the weekend, I haven't started the filming process. My plan is to do all of the filming this Wednesday and any other filming during the weekend because it is Thanksgiving break. Doing the filming all over break gives me more time to film. While I didn't film over the past weekend, I did more planning for the music video and made sure I had everything for it. This included making sure I had all the props for the video and making a list of what needs to be filmed.

On Saturday, I met up with my group mate, Leila, to go over the props. We wanted to make sure we had all the props we would need for the video. We also went into further detail with our props, like what types of food we would include in the picnic. Some of the food we decided on was apples and crackers with cheese. I also went with Leila to many department stores to find the costumes. It was difficult to find a white dress with red flowers. After looking for a long time, we were able to find a white floral dress, but it wasn't exactly what we were looking for. We bought it as a backup dress, but we continued looking. I then remembered Leila had borrowed a white dress with red flowers one time that would be perfect for our main actress to wear. I asked the person who owned the dress if we could borrow it for the video and she said yes. We discovered that we still needed to get a honey necklace, so I was in charge of finding one. I went to many different stores and didn't find anything I felt would be good for the video, so I decided to looked online. While looking at many different online stores I found a variety of options for the necklace. I narrowed it down to a few of my favorites then consulted with Leila on which one I should buy. The necklace we agreed would be best was gold in color and had the word honey written out in lowercase letters. It also came with a blue present box that we thought would be a good addition to the video.

Over the weekend I also made a list that consisted of everything that needed to be filmed. This included what scenes would be in the video and any other ideas that we might later decide we want to add. While writing out the filming list I was looking over the storyboard to make sure I wouldn't forget to include anything. I also wrote out a separate list of the different movements and shots I need for the video. I did this so I could make sure I had a variety of shots and movements to edit into the music video. Having this list would help us stay organized while we are filming and would help us time management our filming day. I don't want to waste any filming times trying to figure out what needs to be filmed. I also don't want to worry about forgetting to video any of the scenes, especially the more important ones.

Storyboarding Blog for Music Video

Today in my AICE Media Studies class, Leila and I started to storyboard our music video. During this process, we had many ideas to include in our video. It was difficult to choose a few because I liked our ideas a lot. Creating the storyboard was very fun and interesting. I enjoyed being able to create a story through the process. The following paragraphs will be the details of each frame of our music video:

FRAME 1:
In this frame, the sound is going to be the diegetic sound of the guitar but, the non-diegetic sound will be the soundtrack in the background. The first frame will have the subject holding the guitar while singing the song. The shot will be a close-up of the subject playing the guitar. This shot will not display the subject's face. The lighting design will consist of bright stage lights and a medium amount of shadows. The color design is black and white. This frame will last between 2 and 4 seconds as the instrumental of the song is playing. To transition from Frame 1 to Frame 2, there is going to be a fade. This will help us to produce an effective flashback.

FRAME 2:
From Frame 2, the shots will be from the point-of-view perspective. In this scene, the camera will be filmed from a high angle of the guitar as the subject is playing the guitar. Then, one of our camera movements will be a tilt from the guitar to our second actress. This will help us communicate to the audience the subtle attraction between the actresses and perform an eye-line shot. From Frame 2 to, the lighting design will have little to no shadows and focused on the actresses and the color design will have a yellowish tint to demonstrate the difference between the past and the present. The second actress will be wearing a white dress with red rose design and black flats. She will have no or natural makeup. The shot will be a medium-long shot of the actress sitting on the picnic blanket while the first actresses in playing the guitar.

FRAME 3:
In this frame, we are going to do a pan of the scenery to act as a transition from the second frame to the fourth frame. The pan will be of some purple flower bushes in my neighborhood to symbolize the magical and mysterious love they have.

FRAME 4:
In this scene, the shot will be from a high angle.  The subject will place the flower crown upon the actress' head and the actress will be giving the necklace to the girl. The scene will have the person with the point of view perspective, opening up the gift. This is a medium-close up shot. There is going to be a subtle tilt of the actress looking down at the gift: the honey necklace.

FRAME 5 & 6:
In this scene, the actresses will be engaging in a conversation while they are eating the food. As the actress with the flower crown is eating, she will have a food smear on their upper chin. This scene will be a medium close up.

FRAME 7:
In this scene, the actress with the P.O.V perspective will use her hand to wipe the food off her face. This will be a close up of the actress's face.

FRAME 8 & 9:
In this scene, the actresses will be walking in the neighborhood on their way to the park. During this frame, the actress wearing the rose dress will walk in front of the camera, turn around and then grab the hand of the point of perspective actress. This will be a long shot of the actress and a tracking shot. The actress is silently blushing but is looking happy.

FRAME 10:
In this scene, the actresses will arrive at the park with a large tree. In this scene, the actresses with the flower crown will be walking towards the tree. Then, a jump cut will occur with the actress in sitting in the tree. While the actress is sitting, the camera will be at a low angle to show the actress' admiration for her love interest. This shot is going to be a wide/ long shot.

FRAME 11:
In this scene, the POV perspective actress will have a tilt of looking up at the sky. This can symbolize the actress is in heaven or a dream because she found someone she loves. This will help  transition into the next scene where the actress is in reality.

FRAME12:
In this scene, the point of view actress is revealed while playing the guitar. She is wearing a yellow cardigan with a white t-shirt, jeans and black sneakers. The lighting design will have more shadows and the color design is black and white. This is supposed to symbolize the gloomy feeling of someone being gone and the cold reality.

FRAME 13:
The last scene will be an extreme close up on the actress' neck to capture the wording of the necklace: honey. Then, there will be a black out of the scene. The color design will be in color but, there is a good amount of shadows.

Planning Blog for Music Video

Today in my AICE Media Studies class, my group mate and I are planning for the music video project. During this class period, we were very productive and were able to established a solid plan for our music video. As Leila was typing on the computer, we were discussing the conventions we will be using in our music video.

Location:
The primary location for this music video will be the dog park in Leila's neighborhood. Since the park is hidden and small, there are fewer people than usual. The main reason we used a park setting is we wanted to capture the innocent love of the subjects. In most films, the location of a romantic montage is at a park or in a meadow. We wanted to replicate it to emphasized the love. The second location for the music video is Leila's neighborhood/ street. We are going to use the neighborhood to film a tracking shot and be able to properly do a jump cut. This will help us create a passage of time. Also, Leila's neighborhood has a pretty, lavender bush. This will help have some symbolism for their love. If all things fail, our backup location will be another park. We don't have to ask permission for any of these locations because they are public places and one of the scenes will be on Leila's property.

Health & Safety:
During our filming process we will have safety. For instance, while we film the tracking shots, we will look both ways for vehicles and pedestrians. Since we are planning for our actress to climb a tree in one of the shots, we will have a spotter to catch them if something goes wrong. If the actress has a sprain ankle, Leila's tia will be there because she has expertise in the medical field.  The last health and safety procedure we will follow is our hydration and maintain our blood sugar levels. Since we live in Florida and it is hot, we will bring water and food to hydrate and replenish our nutrition. This will prevent us from fainting or having a heat stroke.

Props:
In our music video, the most important props will be the Honey necklace and the guitar. Others props we would like to include are a picnic basket, food (perfectibility honey), and picnic blanket. Minor props that will be include are a stool and a microphone. We are going to use the picnic props to illustrate a romantic picnic setting.

Costumes:
The main subject will be wearing a white dress with red roses on it. She will also be wearing flats or nice sandals. The most important accessory apart of her costume is the flower crown. The flower crown will have white, red and yellow flowers. The reason why we wanted the flower crown to be these colors is the colors represent love, passion, friendship, and innocence. The second subject's costume will consists of a yellow cardigan, white shirt, jeans, and black sneakers. The yellow cardigan will literally represent the honey but, figuratively represent their sweet love.

Schedule:
On 11/15/19, Leila and I researched the conventions for a R&B music videos.
On 11/19/19, Leila and I planned conventions for our music video project.
On 11/21/19, Leila and I will be storyboarding our music video.
Between 11/23/19 and 11/24/19, we will be collecting and gathering props and make final arrangements to our schedule.
Between 11/27/19 and 11/30/19, we will be filming the music video project.
Between 12/1/19 and 12/6/19, we will be editing and turning in our music video project.

Research Conventions Blog for Music Video Project

The commercial project has officially come to an end. Producing the Gatorade commercial was an interesting and fun experience, but it was stressful at times. Thanks to this assignment I learned a lot about how commercials are produced. I learned how to storyboard, film and edit. For next time, I now know that I need to make sure I have enough takes of scenes. Also, I need to plan the editing process better, so I'm not rushing to finish. Overall, this project was very informing and now that it is over I can start my next project, which is a music video. Today in my AICE Media Studies class, I started the research for the music video. For this project I am working with one other person, Leila.

The song selection process was difficult because Leila and I were debating on which songs to use Riptide or Honey. We both "planned" a storyboard to see which video was the easiest or had more creativity. Although both songs are easy to film, we decided to use Honey. The song we are going to film is in the R&B/ Soul category and it is performed by Kehlani. The reason why we chose this song is we wanted to include more representation in our music video. Last year, the GSA at our school hosted its first Open Mic Event. One of our friends tried to plan to perform this song but, unfortunately, due to testing, she could not do it. Since there a very few music videos that focused on LGBT+ and the romance, we wanted to make a music video that is unique and represents the innocence of LGBT+ relationships.

Conventions for Camera Shots, Angles and Movements:
In most R&B songs, there is a significant amount of wide and tracking shots. In these wide and tracking shots, there were multiple scenes of different landscapes. For instance, one scene would include a meadow of grassland and then transition into someone in a forest. The tracking shots are used to illustrate the subjects moving. There are a variety of other shots. This includes long shots, medium close-ups, and close-ups. In most R&B music videos, there are medium-long shots of the subject working towards the camera. The camera angels in R&B music videos are usually low angle and eye-line angle. While researching the conventions, there were few high angles. The camera movements of R&B music videos consist of a few tilts and tracking shots.

Conventions for Mis-En-Scene:
In R&B music videos, the subjects are wearing a variety of costumes and utilize a few props. The makeup range from natural to intense makeup. Most of the locations consist of scenery and parties at bars.

Lighting and Color Design Conventions:
In R&B songs, there is a variety of lighting designs. In some music videos, there were some scenes with tinted lighting or bright lighting but, throughout the music videos, there were very little scenes with predominantly shadows. The lighting is often dark to emphasize the passion and emotions between the subjects.l The color design of R&B music videos also have a variety of colors. For instance, some music videos were black and white while others contained bright and flamboyant colors. In Honey, the color design was tinted yellow and were shades of blues.

Editing Blog

On November 4th and today, I worked on editing the commercial. When I first found out that my class finally received new laptops, I was relieved. Mostly because it meant my group and I could finally start the editing process. We were only given two days to complete the process for the 30 second commercial. Trying to finish the commercial within those two days was kind of stressful and frustrating. Even though we got new laptops they were still slow, which wasted a lot of precious editing time. Disagreements within the group also caused some issues. However, even with the obstacles we were able to finish the editing. Now that the commercial is nearly complete, I can really appreciate all the effort that goes into making one. Overall, I believe that this project was an interesting experience.

On November 4th, Leila and I had to dump the footage onto the laptop again. We had to do this because we were using a different laptop then before. When all the footage was dumped and imported, I could finally start the editing process. On this day, I mostly took control over the laptop. I would look at the footage and discuss with my group what would be best to include in the commercial. When looking at the footage, I considered what take looked smoother and fit best. Viewing the footage on the editing software sometimes made it look choppy, so I pointed out that we could look at the footage directly from the folder. This way, it was easier to view the footage. When we decided what take to use, I would move the footage onto the track and cut it to fit the commercial. Also, I gave my opinion on what music my teammates were considering for the commercial and helped Leila with creating the split screen.

Today, November 6, I took less control over the laptop. I mostly provided my own input for the editing. At the beginning of the class, I helped cut any footage out from the track that we didn't need. I also worked with my group to speed up some of the footage, so the commercial would be 25 to 30 seconds. Leila imported the music that was found by Emma and Hailey, and I helped to add it to the track. The next step was to add in the voiceovers. I listened to all of the voiceover takes with my group and we agreed that Hailey's take was the best for the commercial. I also looked over the part of the footage where Leila and I are running in place next to the camera to exaggerate the sound of running. I helped add in the footsteps to the shots that involved running. I had to make the footage of the running in place not visible, so the audience could still see the commercial while hearing the footsteps. In order to get the commercial done we had to use every second provided to us. Overall, now that the commercial is nearly finished, I am happy to no longer have the stress that came with creating it.

Editing the Commercial

Today in my AICE Media Studies class, I wasn't able to edit my commercial. I was informed by my teacher that there was a problem with the computers we were going to use. Also, that Pinnacle Studio, an editing software, wasn't working on all the computers. This issue caused us to get behind on finishing the commercial. We had to revise our commercial plan. I wish the computers would work because the problem is wasting valuable editing time. It is frustrating knowing that time is being wasted. However, we were told that we will get laptops as soon as possible, so we could begin the editing process. Our original plan today was to add in our transitions, edit the lighting, add the voice overs, and add the music.

While I couldn't edit today, I was able to do some last class on October 25. During that class my group and I mostly filmed any footage we were missing from our first day of filming. After we finished the filming process, we were able to edit. When my group and I got back to the classroom I dumped all the footage we got that day onto the computer. I also put all the footage on a flash drive. I did this so if the SD card were to go missing and if the footage from the computer was deleted, we wouldn't lose all our work from the previous days. Next, Leila and I opened up Pinnacle Studio, so we could import the footage to the software. The importing process didn't take a long time, so we still had a decent amount of time to start editing. I looked over all the footage we got that day. I got to explore the software, so I could have an understanding of how to work it when I get the ability to. I tried to add some of the footage to a track for practice. I was also able to make a match shot. My teacher was able to teach my group and I how to properly do a split screen for our commercial. During this time the computer started to act up, which made it hard to do any editing. The split screen was the last thing we were able to do on Pinnacle Studio before we had to turn it off because of the issue with the computers.

Since we weren't able to actually edit today, we went over the editing plan. As a group we discussed what transitions we want to use. We also talked about the type of lighting and sound we would want. We figured out the type of music we are putting in the background of the commercial. I wrote out the plan on a separate sheet of paper. I also wrote out the order we want our footage to be in. I did this, so when we get the ability to edit, we will not have to waste time on figuring out what to do. When we get the new laptops, I plan on starting the editing process immediately. It is stressful when you have a time limit to do work and you can't do it because of technological difficulties. I hope that the school will provide us with the laptops soon, so I can edit/finish my commercial.

Filming the Commercial

During my AICE Media Studies class, we filmed our commerical. My role in filming consisted of being one of the camerawomen and directing. I also did any voiceovers we might want to put in the commerical. Before we started filming I made a check list of all the takes we need, so we wouldn't forget anything. I didn't want to waste anytime trying to figure out what to film next. Having the check list was very helpful. I had a lot of fun during the filming process; however, it is a lot of hard work. There were a few things I forgot about before filming. Like, there would be other people filming around me and that there would be another class on the track field. I just did my best to work around the other people. I tried to have only the actresses in shot and while it didn't always happen, I think the filming went well.

On our first day of filming, on October 23, the group went out to the track field at our school to set up. I helped with getting the camera and the tripod set up. After I made sure the camera had full battery and was working the filming began. I started off by letting my group know about the checklist I made. Everyone looked over it and decided the best way and time to film everything on the list. It was decided that we should film in the same order of the commerical and do any voiceovers last. As one of the camerawomen, I made sure I took a few takes of everything we wanted to film, so I would have good footage for the commercial. I also made sure we had takes from many angles and shots, so we could choose what looked best when editing. As the director, I told the actresses what to do during the takes, like when to start running. I made sure to get their opinions on what should happen in the takes. While I was the main director, everyone else did help co-director, so we would have a commercial we would all be proud of. As one of the voice actresses, I did any of the voiceovers that we might want to include in our commerical. After we finished filming for the day, I dumped all the footage onto a computer.

Our next day of filming, today, my group went over the footage we got a few days ago. I wanted to do this, so I could see what we needed to film before the end of class. I wrote down a list of the scenes we should redo, and any scenes we were missing. After planning, my group and I headed to the track field. I checked to make sure the camera and tripod worked and then I set them up for filming. I went over the new list one more time with my group and then started filming. We didn't have a lot of scenes to film today since we did most of it on our first day of filming. I still had the same roles as before. I directed the actresses with the help of the entire group. I filmed whatever I needed for the commerical with the help of the other camerawoman. Also, I redid any of the voiceover lines that I was assigned to do. I made sure that we had enough footage to do our commerical, then we went back inside. I dumped the new footage onto the computer. Overall, filming the commercial was a great experience. I learned about how much hard work and planning has to go into filming to make sure you have a good final product.

Editing Lesson

Today in my AICE Media Studies class I learned about the camera I will be using to film. I also learned how to use a tripod. One of the most important things taught today was how to edit my footage. I think this is one of the most important things to learn because that is how I will be constructing my commercial. I first learned dumping. Dumping is when a person moves the footage from a SD card to a computer. I do this by putting my SD card in a SD holder, then plugging it into the computer. I go to my files and click on DCIM, which is where all my footage should be. If it isn't there I can go to private, click on AVCHD, then click on BDMV and look for my footage. Next, all I have to do it highlight the footage I want then move it to a folder.

I was also taught how to import. Importing is moving the footage from the desktop to the editing software. The software I am using for my commerical is called Pinnacle Studio. In order to import my footage, I first open Pinnacle Studio. I go onto the editing screen, go to file, and click create new movie. I then press the import button and press the plus sign by the word desktop. I go to my folder and click the footage I want to use in my commercial. Lastly, I press start import. Now that the footage has been imported I can start editing. In order to edit the raw footage, I would have to move the clips I want to the second track. Raw footage are the original takes. I would move the clips to track two because the first track will be used for titles and the third track will be for music.

After learning how to import, I learned about how to edit the footage. I was first showed how to do a cut. In order to do a cut I would have to use the red line to indicate the footage I want to get rid of. Then, I would click the button with a razor blade on it and click the footage I want deleted. After, I would press delete. I was also taught how to detach sound. To do this I would have to right click the footage I don't want to have sound. Next, I separate the image from the audio. If I want to detach the audio I would delete the sound. If I wanted to do a voiceover it would be done the same way, but I would delete the image of the person doing the voiceover, not the sound.

The last thing I learned was how to export. Exporting takes place when footage is taken from editing software to the computer. Once I'm finished with editing, I file save my film. I then hit the export button and have it transfered over to my commercial folder on the computer. I can then watch the rendered version of the commerical. Rendering is the process of attaching the footage in a way so the film runs smoothly. If I notice a mistake I can go back to Pinnacle Studio to fix it. If everything is perfect I can turn it in. Overall, today I learned a lot of  information on editing. I found the information taught in my class very interesting.

Planning Blog for Gatorade Commercial

Today in my AICE Media Studies class my group and I worked on making a plan for our commercial. We worked together to decide what props we need and what costumes will be worn. We also worked on creating a schedule, deciding the locations for filming, and our backup plan. We established our roles in making the commercial, like who was going to be the main subject. We decided that Leila and Emma will be the actors and Hailey and I will do any voice overs needed and be the camerawomen. Everyone in the group took part in providing ideas and feedback for the commercial as we were planning. Everyone would do their own research, then go over what they found together. Emma and Hailey mostly worked on finding ideas for props and costumes. Leila was in charge of keeping notes of everyone's findings. I worked on the schedule and backup plan. Together we researched where we should do our filming. We finished our plan for the commercial, but it is possible that it might change a little. Before it is time for us to film, we might come up with new ideas and change our original plan slightly.

Props:
Since my group and I decided to produced a Gatorade commercial, our main prop is a Gatorade drink. Other props we will include are a soccer ball, tennis racket and tennis balls.

Costumes:
In our commercial, we will have two of our group members as the subject. Our actors would wear athletic clothes. They would either wear athletic shorts or athletic leggings with light color tank top or a cotton t-shirt. They would also wear running shoes or tennis shoes. We might have our actors wear sweat bands or headbands to keep their hair out of their face. If we could not obtain sweat bands or headbands, our actors would wear their hair in a ponytail.

Schedule:
On 10/8/19, our group research conventions and codes of sports drinks commercial.
On 10/11/19, our group establish the props, costumes, schedule, location list, and backup plan.
On 10/15/19, our group will create the storyboard for the 30 seconds commercial.
On 10/22/19, our group will film and record the necessary shots for our commercial.
On 10/24/19, our group will edit and add the final touches to the commercial.

Location List:
Our main location is the track field. At the track field, we will film our two actors before, during and after running the track. This would help emphasized the need of Gatorade to have energy at practice. Also, we would film our two actors kicking a soccer ball or doing soccer drills.

Our second location is the stairwell in front of the media center. At this location, we will film our two actors playing basketball and hitting a tennis ball against the wall. This would help us show athletes from different sports can gain energy from Gatorade.

Backup Plan:
If  there the weather is not good or preferable, then our location will be the area by the stairwell closes to building 505 or the grass area between the auditorium and building 5. We would quickly film our actors passing a soccer ball. If one of our members are absent, then one of the actors would take over the position of camerawoman.

Research Blogs: Commercial Conventions

Today in AICE Media Studies, we were assigned to produce a commercial of a product of a popular brand or a PSA about vaping prevention. My group and I decided to produce a commercial about Gatorade because we found it was easiest to do on our school's campus. There are four people in the group: Hannah, Emma, Leila and Hailey.

In Gatorade commercials, the elements of the commercial usually create a dramatic and serious tone. Most of the subjects in the commercials are wearing sports uniforms. For example, track athletes usually wear shorts, tank tops, and sweat bands on their head and around their arms. Most of the time, the commercial would film an exhausted athlete. This would emphasize the importance and the effects of the product. The establishing shot would usually establish the location of the practice. For example, they would have the establishing shot at a track field for a track athlete. Also,  sports commercials would consists of long shots and medium close ups to emphasize the athletes' actions.

The lighting in sports commercials is usually harsh, bright stage light of an athlete. This helps develop a serious tone because it makes the commercial more dramatic. The lighting design produces more shadows to make the product more appealing on screen. The color design of the commercials usually consists of dull colors with a pop of brighter colors such as reds, oranges, blues i.e., to emphasize the the product.

The sound in sports commercials is usually a voice-over expressing the feelings of the athletes. Diegetic sounds and ambient sounds are usually louder than they would normally be. For example, walking/running, the sounds of breathing, and the sound of someone drinking. In the commercials, dialogue is usually muffled but is still present. Sometimes there is an influencer giving a motivating speech or there are sounds of sport crowds in the background.

This is an example of the all the elements used in a sports commercial.

Introductory

Hello everyone, my name is Hannah and I’m in 10th grade at a school in Florida. I’m in the Cambridge AICE Magnet program. Presently, I am taking three AICE classes: AICE English, AICE European History, and AICE Media Studies. This blog I am writing is for my AICE Media Studies class. Other classes I am taking are Algebra 2 Honors, Spanish 2, Chemistry Honors, and Vocal Ensemble. I spend a lot of time studying for my classes because of the amount of work I receive; however, I don’t let it stop me from having some fun at school. I take part in my school’s vocal ensemble and help out the school’s theatre by being a part of crew. I do these activities for fun because I enjoy taking part in them.

Outside of school I enjoy reading and drawing. I like being able to get lost in a book and letting my imagination take over when drawing. These activities help me relax, which is one of the main reasons I really enjoy them. Besides from those two, I also like baking. I take every chance I can to bake with my friends. We have baked everything from cookies to key lime pie. I believe that I’m a very studious, hardworking, self-motivated, and caring person. I spend a lot of my time studying and if I set my mind to something, I will get it done. Also, I really like helping others. I spend a lot of my time volunteering at schools because I enjoy helping the teachers and students. Since I enjoy helping others a lot I want to major in psychology once I graduate from high school. While I’m still not sure what university/college I want to go to, I know that is what I want to do.

There are many things important to me, but the most important are my family and friends. My main family consist of my mom, dad, and brother. Thanks to them, I have had so many wonderful experiences. Furthermore, they help me whenever I need it and  I’m very thankful for them. Additionally, I have three cats that I love. I have a great core group of friends. Some I have known for years and some I have only met last year; however, that doesn’t change the fact that they are all important to me. We have so much fun together and often go out for ice cream after school. A random fact about me is I really want to travel. I haven’t had the opportunity to travel outside the country yet, but I hope one day I can. Another fact is I really want to learn Sign Language. I don’t usually like to talk about myself, so thank you for taking the time to read through this post that is about me. Until next time, have a wonderful day.
